BROWN, JAMES
He was a member of the IOW County School Board for 29 years (1974-2003). He served as the First Black Chairman for 12 of those years. He is noted for bringing in the ROTC to the county schools, helped initiate the Alternative program, “C” average requirement for all curriculum activities, equal pay for employees, and initiated student representation on the board. Now serving on the county Board of Supervisors.

GWALTNEY, GEORGE W.
Colonel E.M. Morrison, Isle of Wight’s first Superintendent of schools, found Mr. Gwaltney teaching in a school near Windsor in 1881, he had built, at his own expense. Gwaltney had also made blackboards and maps. He taught for over forty years, retired in the 1920’s, and died a few years later. |

She was born in 1914, president of the Isle of Wight County chapter of the NAACP from 1964-1968. She worked for years leading voter drives and was an ever-present voice at Democratic conventions. Known to many as Isle of Wight’s ‘Rosa Parks’ and civil rights activist. Deceased |

PRETLOW, KENNETH
He was a great advocate of education who helped establish the first real high school for Blacks in the county, IOWTS, sending all of his children to college and helping others to get a college education. He died in the 1940’s. |

TYLER, GEORGIE D.
Mrs. Tyler first began teaching in the one room school called Muddy Fork in 1912, the next two years at Blooming Light Hall, then teaching with Mr. G.Gwaltney at the new, two room Windsor School, sometimes called Sugar Hill. After three years she was appointed a Jeanes Supervisor. During that time there were 27 schools and she was to visit each one twice per month. After retirement in 1946, a new elementary and high school was built in Windsor (1950-51), and named for her. Deceased |
